Recently I have been critiquing a few movies I have seen and would like to share my thoughts on them and spoil them for you if you have not seen them.
First, the remakes of the old movies I have seen recently has been very disappointing.
It’s Alive was a blah movie for me in the story line department, however keeping with the grand tradition of demonic babies I was ok with it.
Last house on the left sucked the big huge donkey balls. NONE of it was right, they put it all in modern times- this I can understand. But some of the most important key elements that made the original so great were completely overlooked.
Friday the 13th was pretty repetitive but followed the original lead the best.
Second, The horror movies staring babies/children have been shockingly good.
Grace was an amazing movie. I absolutely loved it! It was a morbid combination of Stephen King thriller style and Wes Craven psycho spatter. I could also see a Kubrick/Raimi combo as well if you like that analogy better. Hope to see more from Paul Solet soon.
Summery: A naturalist woman has a miscarriage after a car wreck that also kills her husband. Her midwife cannot convince her to go to the hospital so she carries the dead fetus to term and them wills it back to life. Soon she realizes that the baby needs human blood to sustain its animation. Which the mother gladly provides, by any means necessary.
Orphan is also a great movie. Very thrilling. Appropriate sexuality, drama, devastation, guilt, and pessimism. With amazing twists that you don’t see coming.
Summery: Mother of 2 pregnant with 3rd delivers a stillborn. A year or so later they adopt a young girl from a catholic orphanage. After many strange happenings the mother suspects something is wrong. After the failed seduction of the girls new father we learn that she is really a 33 year old sociopath with a hormonal disorder that causes proportional dwarfism.
